It's interesting that the Multnomah Hotel was so welcoming to the suffragettes. Maybe 50 years later they were under new management. But they weren't as hospitible to African Americans. I was in my early teens so am not 100% certain on the facts. But I remember them refusing to let (I believe) Ella Fitzgerald stay there when she was performing in Portland. I think she ended up staying at the new Hilton or the Benson. That part I don't remember. I just remember feeling very ashamed of Portland when I read about it.

Blaise and Antoine Labbe also used Warren H. Williams to design their double mansions located on Nineteenth Avenue between Laurel and Myrtle streets. Though the houses were built circa 1885, both were gone by the 1910s. I checked an old photo and "Googled" the location and was delighted to see that though the mansions are long-gone, the original retaining walls are still there!

The local suffragists were in high gear that summer, too. The Ballyho Lunch wagon circulated around the town giving out sandwiches, ice cream and cold drinks while trying to convince men to vote for woman suffrage that November. Check out plans for the centennial in 2012 at www.oregonsuffrage.org
